Shoe Tips

A shoe that fits well can prevent many common foot problems. Here's advice from medical professionals:

  • Shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet have swelled from hours of standing and walking. Buy athletic shoes within an hour of exercising.
  • Don't buy shoes that aren't comfortable right out of the box. Odds are they won't get better.
  • Make sure there is a half-inch space from the tip of your longest toe to the end of the shoe.
  • Your feet aren't identical, so the mate of a shoe that feels fine on one foot may not fit the other. Try on both shoes.
  • Recognize when workout shoes are worn out. Put your shoes on a counter top and look at them from behind. If they're rolling inward or outward, or the tread is worn down, they're no longer giving you adequate support or shock absorption. Replace them.
  • If you've had pain in the ball of your foot, avoid women's dress shoes with a heel of more than two inches in height. Stick with one-inch heels or lower.
  •
